Media Bias or News for Sale?

The statement of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte about media and some journalists as "pera-pera lang yan" is an observation of an experienced public servant serving Filipinos in Southern Philippines for over 30 years.

It has always been my belief that, aside from tradition and common perception, if an aged and experienced person speaks, he must be speaking from experience, and consequently of the truth. Even the Bible recognizes the wisdom of the aged.

PROVERBS 20:29
The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

PROVERBS 16:31
The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.

JOB 12:12 (RSV)
Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days.

A person maybe speaking of lies and hypocrisy if such a person is beholden to someone else's dominion and power.

PROVERBS 29:12
If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.

But if he is not, then he can be truthful because he can see things from all sides with no one dictating to him.

For somebody like President-elect Duterte who is not being dictated or dominated even by his own religion when he said "I'm not anymore a Catholic," he deserves credibility.

We must go back to family planning. As for myself, I am no longer a Catholic but a Christian. And I have this deep, abiding faith in God to guide all of us, and for me, to have a clear mind. (http://www.pahomepage.com/news/philippines-new-leader-to-be-dictator-against-corruption)

Even friendship does not factor in Pres. Duterte’s decisions. When he said about Apollo Quibuloy that he does not have to consult anybody in manning the government of persons he personally knows, it proves outright that the man is not beholden even to his best of friends.

Duterte issued this statement after his close friend, Pastor Quiboloy, complained of being shut out from the selection of new cabinet secretaries:

My loyalty to my friends ends where my loyalty to my country begins. Wala 'yung usapan na we will have to... kunsultahin kita. I decide alone. Tanungin mo isa't isa iyan. Walang nagturo sa akin. Ako ang nag-isip. (Dharel Placido, “Duterte to friends: I decide alone,” ABS-CBN News, 22 May 2016)

President Duterte is very much like a preacher beholden not to any man but to God.

II CORINTHIANS 6:11
O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged.

II CORINTHIANS 7:4, 2
4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you...
2 Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.

The manner of speaking used by the Apostle Paul is not meant to please men but the person he is beholden to, and that is God.

GALATIANS 1:10
For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

I believe that not even the Iglesia ni Manalo, nor us, can influence the rightful judgment of President Duterte. That would be good news – for the sake of the country that it has long tried to corrupt for its recommendations to sensitive positions in the government. In the past, “The INC makes it easy for their political allies to know what they want in the form of lists of appointive positions they want secured for their own members.” (http://www.rappler.com/newsbreak/64529-inc-lobbies-key-government-positions)

Duterte’s declaration about some members of the media and journalists is not a fairytale and a no non-sense observation. I also am thinking based on my experience among so-called "journalists" of giant networks in the Philippines.

Questions to media

Why is it that "news" that tend to destroy my reputation about invented cases my religious enemies filed against me in Philippine courts, is being sensationalized by "respected journalists" of giant networks?

Social responsibility suggests that media has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large. It should not play favorites; it should not act based mainly on gain.

When media is scored as biased, facts are not checked; the story is not complete yet you impress that it is. So what you have then is garbage since you only have one side.

And why is it that the works of charity that the members of Church of God are doing like free medical missions daily for more than 10 years, free legal services, Libreng Sakay, Dunong Gulong, Transient Home, Free Education, Rescue in calamity stricken areas, are never being heard from these giant networks?

Meanwhile, a one-day medical mission of my enemies is very well publicized in almost all of these networks. Is it because they do something negative as in blocking the traffic in exchange for shouting to the world what they do once in a blue moon? Do they pay to be covered in the news?

For now, we can say there is bias in news coverage – in the selection, to begin with. That is the least charge we can give to media.

What is the real score? What is with media these days? Chances are that President Duterte knows about it. He said there are three kinds of journalists and two of them are: 1) Publicists or those who are paid to be mouthpieces of politicians; and 2) Extortionists, the vultures of journalism. (http://politics.com.ph/dutertes-3-kinds-journalists-crusaders-mouthpieces-vultures-extortionists-deserve-die/)

An event like the Kahit Isang Araw Lang - Takbo Para sa Libreng Kolehiyo (Just for One Day - Run for Free College) that benefited many poor countrymen, even attended by the PNP Chief and the DepEd Secretary, is not a part of their news. Is it because that it is not about those of the rich and famous religions? Here’s the excerpted rendition of Wikipedia -

Kahit Isang Araw Lang Unity Run was a run organized by UNTV.It was held in the Mall of Asia Pasay City Metro Manila Philippines on January 22, 2012. The advocacy of Kuya, Daniel Razon (CEO of UNTV) also known as "Mr. Public Service", was to create another historic fun run for education with at least 300,000 participants.

Razon said, "The Project is actually a fitting follow up of a similar event last held last 2010 that not only left a mark in history in terms of the number of participants, but for the realization of its advocacy of providing free college education to beneficiaries."

In partnership with the Department of Education, Razon and the Department of Education Secretary, Armin Luistro, made a deal in response to the shortage of some aspects of education.

It could be seen that nothing was written or heard of about the 2010 event – a clear snub of the TV giant networks because coverage of it was probably sacrilege. The organizers of the event are known as UNTV associates.

But was this news only for UNTV? This is an effort that is trying to help the poor get education, right? Where is now that social responsibility that media is supposed to be committed to?

At least, even if late [not a news cast], the Unity Run of 2012 was recognized by ABS-CBN's noontime show, "SHOWTIME" last February 17, 2012, almost a month after it was held.

In contrast, here are some of the not news worthy items of these giant networks: Two women engage in hair-pulling over a man and a quarrel of women just because of ice.

Are these the important things people need to know?

In contrast, an event that will give some 10M pesos to charitable institutions being held at Smart Araneta to help our poor countrymen was not the subject - never a subject - of their news.

What is the UNTV Cup?

UNTV Cup is a charity basketball league on Philippine TV, the first charity game dedicated for public servants and celebrities in the Philippines. It is an original concept by Daniel Razon tagged as Mr. Public Service and materialized by UNTV. The players are given a chance to play and at the same time donate their earnings to a charity of their own choice. The game was started on July 29, 2013.

Season 4 that concluded in March 2016 shows that the recipients were given a total of 10 million pesos.

AFP Cavaliers has received 4 million pesos prize (3.5 million pesos for beneficiaries and 500 thousand pesos for the champion team), while the 2nd placer, PNP Responders has received 2 million pesos prize (1.7 million pesos for the beneficiary and 300,000 for the team). 10 other teams will also receive cash grants for their donors and the team at the end of the season. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNTV_Cup_Season_4)

If the goal of the media is to inform, to educate and to entertain, why is there apparent media bias? Maybe President Duterte is right when he said "pera pera lang yan!”

  26. luchi cruz valdez and arnold clavio and their respective networks know very well that the program they made intended to malign and defame Bro.Eli are all based on lies invented by the iglesia ni manalo. But for whatever reason or whatever amount, they were blind to even consider the side of Bro.Eli. They aired their defamatory programs not only once.
During those times, I was not a member of the Church yet. And I must admit that I was affected painfully. I was in the verge of loosing hope on religions and it was Bro.Eli's program is the only ones left for me to watch and the only ones I am hoping for enlightenment. Had Bro.Eli left the issues unanswered, I could have believed them. I thank God once again I was not left hanging. Being quick to answer, I kept on following Bro.Eli's program until I was firm enough to receive baptism.
I COULD HAVE LOST MY SOUL TO THESE BIASED MEDIA NETWORKS AND MEDIA MEN.

  72. In journalism, I was taught that THE PEN is the most powerful weapon that nuclear have no defense against. Of course now we could relate that to a keyboard be it on smartphones, tablets or pc's. Imagine how powerful words could weigh. When GOD said, let there be light --- that WORD made that LIGHT. And though we cannot associate the omnipotence of GOD and His authority when it comes to words, the PEN which represents MEDIA in this case, could actually start or stop a war. So can you imagine how disastrous it could be if that PEN or the so-called MEDIA was corrupted. What lies will it refrain from speaking and what silence of the mouth is worth not hearing?

When I was still a mass-communication majoring in journalism student in my college days, I have already heard of media black out and corrupt prominent journalists of major tv stations that were taking bribes in exchange of either their silence or their eloquence in verbalizing news or intrigue. You won't believe that these so-called trusted broadcasters and writers would actually accept money from hoodlums, drug lords, defamed celebrities and politicians. Perhaps indeed that this isn't happening only in the Philippines but worldwide. Yet why am I not surprised that this is the case?
Wasn't even the MTRCB which was suppose to have control over tv broadcast , involved in alleged bribe taking controversies? Go to youtube and search Ang Tamang Daan and you would see how the MTRCB played deaf and blind over the harassment , malicious defamation and libelous words the INC ministers used to defame Bro. ELI Soriano, as they aired live on their church owned TV channel. Yet the program Ang Dating Daan have been closed and suspended too many times, only for telling the truth. So how do we remedy that? That's what we call PAID JOURNALISM.

So is there a bias or news for sale? Guess again!

Thanks be to GOD for this informative blog BroELI.
    To GOD be the GLORY.

  99. THIS IS THE TIME THAT THE MEDIA SHOULD BE USED FOR PUBLIC SERVICE, INFORMATION, EDUCATION, AND SPECIALLY SO FOR THE PROPAGATION OF MORAL AND ESPIRITUAL VALLUES,,,, TO GOD BE THE GLORY.....

  103. how fair is media nga ba nowadays? one of our relatives was once a victim, isasabuhay daw nila, they interviewed the family para makuha ang buong story, but it turned out way different nung ipalabas na sa tv... truth is, nakakawala ng tiwalang manood ng news after that... media most of the time exaggerate, "dagdag bawas" to catch viewers' attention... good thing meron paring channel u can rely on, i.e. UNTV...

Tama... karamihan kasi FOR SALE!!!

  115. Thanks be to God for this blog....the perilous plight of Philippine journalism is towards trivial puerility or decadent infancy veering itself from its august image of accurate, non-selective, unbiased and infallible media reporting. The innate causative factors maybe linger on money, envy, ego-boasting, & power control that sound logical to present un-Christian institution....
