Meaning of Words and Meaning Them

5/13/2016 , 197 Comments

The true meaning of a word or the thought in it depends on how it is used by the speaker or the writer; there are words colloquial, legal, idiomatic, and many more. But words used in a colloquial manner may imply a very different meaning when it is used in a biblical way.

One good example is the English word, "know." In a court of law, the presiding judge may ask someone in the witness stand, "Do you know the accused?" A judge sometimes is satisfied when a witness points with his index finger to somebody inside the courtroom.

Colloquially, someone may say, "I know the President because he, with his family, were our neighbors ten years ago."

These are the common uses of the word "know".

Biblically, the word "know," yâda‛ in Hebrew and ginōskō in Greek, may mean a deeper thing especially when used between a man and a woman.

GENESIS 4:1, 25
1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bore a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

It is clear in theses verses that the word "know" or "knew" implies sexual intercourse.

Joseph had known Mary, contrary to the belief of the Catholic Church that Mary was forever a virgin. In fact, he bore at least six children with Mary.

MATTHEW 1:24-25
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

The phrase, "knew her not till" implies that after the birth of the Firstborn Jesus, Mary was known to Joseph, having at least six children with him.

Jesus was described as the firstborn, strengthening the idea that there were other children born to Mary.

MARK 6:3
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

The phrase, "are not his sisters here with us?" implies that Jesus Christ has at least two sisters making his brethren at the very least six!

What about election?

The word "election," as we know colloquially, is a democratic process whereby people of a nation, like the Philippines, elect or vote for a candidate for a particular government office.

In the Bible, God elects. Election in the Bible means to choose somebody to be given or to be gifted of a particular office.

I THESSALONIANS 1:4
Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

It is for a particular function that a Christian is elected by God.

II PETER 1:10
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

Why is it that in the Bible, God is the person that elects or that chooses someone for a particular office? The logic is wise and sensible. God knows a man and everything in him.

JOHN 2:24-25
24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

God knows the deepest secret of the most intricate part of our being.

JEREMIAH 17:9-10
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

God's choices are sure and he does it without repentance.

THE ROMANS 11:29
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

However, it is different with mankind: our choices are not always sure.

We humans choose or elect, but sometimes and most of the time we end up in repentance because we made the wrong choice. At times, the repentance is made when the one we elected proves the contrary to our hopes.

The Filipino people after voting for a particular candidate to the highest office in the land end up grieving and complaining because of frustrations and broken promises made by politicians. Our choices are not always sure, and many things factor into the fulfillment of those promises. We can only hope they mean what they promised.

The overwhelming mandate and trust given to President elect Rodrigo Duterte, according to some analysts, is because of his promise to the electorate that he will curve criminality, drug addiction, and corruption within a period of six months. Such is the expectation of a people longing for justice and genuine reform in government. Honestly speaking, I am one of them.

Mabuhay ka Presidente! We are praying for you and for the entire nation!

Sincerely yours,

Brother Eli

  20. We, as a Christian, were taught to submit ourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake...(I Pe.2:13)

    KING JAMES VERSION
    THE ROMANS 13:1
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
    KING JAMES VERSION
    THE ROMANS 13:2
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
    THE ROMANS 13:3
"3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil."

May the Lord God be with the Philippines' new President. We are also hoping that the Filipino people experience the change for the nation which we are all longing for!

Malaki talaga ang Pagkakaiba ng Salita ng Dios Sa salita ng tao, kung iisipin mo pala na ang nagsulat ng Biblia ay ordinaryong tao lang, magkakamali at magkakamali tayo, dapat muna tayong mag-isip kung ano ang ibig sabihin, hindi tayo dapat magbigay agad ng konklusyon, ito ang bagay na natutunan ko sa Blog na ito, Salamat sa Dios, To God Be The Glory!

  69. Elections give the power to the people and enable them to choose their leaders who make decisions on their behalf. Other forms of government like dictatorships do not have this option. Thanks be to God that we belong to a democratic government where we people rules based on their wants and needs. That’s why, elections are essential because during that times, people have the opportunity to choose who they would like to represent them. The leaders that are chosen then have the opportunity to vote and institute rules that represent what the people would have selected.

Election is something where we can exercise our rights to choose for a leader. Most of the times, as human as we are, we made a wrong choice and decisions. In this very particular election, I voted to a person whom can create a great impact to our society. I presumed he is not that competent enough to handle such position, but because of our previous experiences, we often end up to frustrations due to our expectations that were failed to met. This guy has the balls to eradicated the illegal drugs and criminality issues. The latter has been waited for long time, people are hungry for resolution. This Candidate is aware of consequences he might be facing when he starts to implement his platforms. But God willing, My choice to lead this country if not 100% but at least among those platforms he mentions such as DRUGS, CRIMES, DISCIPLINE AND FEDERALISM will be manifested in his term.

  89. Excerpt from the blog:

"We humans choose or elect, but sometimes and most of the time we end up in repentance because we made the wrong choice. At times, the repentance is made when the one we elected proves the contrary to our hopes.

Such is the expectation of a people longing for justice and genuine reform in government. Honestly speaking, I am one of them."

Comment: It is very clear from the above part of the article that BE categorically admitted that he is among those people who expect justice and genuine reform in government as promised by President elect Duterte to wit: That he(Duterte) will curve criminality, drug addiction, and corruption within a period of six months.

That being President elect Duterte's words, he is expected to mean those words and promises to be fulfilled, otherwise, those who voted for him will end up frustrated. Hence, BE prays for him and for the nation.

As a leader it is not important to have a good education background nor excellent credentials, God chooses from the heart of a man, as God choses David to replace Saul, a simple shepherd, as Jesus chosed his desciples, mostly fishermen. God works in different ways we sometimes do not understand. But in the end it will be revealed to us by whom he chosed, that would be Bro Ely and Bro Daniel..

  122. The incoming President (President-elect) has caught the attention & won the hearts & minds of most Filipino people due to his unyielding political will & resolute leadership. Such attributes brought him to an overwhelming victory in the recent May 9, 2016 Presidential Elections.

With the said character he was known for, I am hopeful that the incoming President, would not succumb to the undue intervention of unscrupulous influence peddlers like the INC leaders & other religious leaders who do not observe the boundaries of the separation of church & state; & do not respect the orderly administration of justice & rule of law. Worst, these religious leaders, especially INC leaders, even arrogate unto themselves the wielding of unbridled interference in the bureaucracy & other democratic processes.

Let it be clarified that what we would want to beseech to the incoming Chief Executive & our government leaders is only FAIR TREATMENT not special treatment like what the INC & other religious organizations usually do, so that religious freedom as well as freedom of expression & right to equality as enshrined in the constitution & guaranteed by statutes will not be brushed aside in favor of bigoted interests.

I am looking forward that when the incoming President expressed his advocacy for religious freedom & the likes during campaign period… he did not only said what he mean but he meant what he said… Stated differently, meaning of words & meaning them… Thnx Mr. Controversy Extraordinary for another enlightening blog. 150. I agree. It is true that the meaning of the words we utter or write may vary depending on how we use these words. There are groups of people who are using words as codes in translating or transferring ideas secretly/privately. And if other people, who do not belong to the group, may hear these words, it could arouse misunderstandings. That is why we should always be cautious and careful. We should always remember that if God is always choosing the right things to do, we should also do the same as His people and as people of our country.

  152. Translating a Biblical text requires a lot of study. We should consider the old Hebrew Language and how the Hebrew people use the language with regards to their culture. The etymology of the word is really important. According to Else Veira, in translation, we should be faithful on the source language or text and we should consider the equivalence of the word from the source language to the target language.
May the "Gospel of God" enlighten and guide our president!

  153. Words have different meanings and so we should be aware in our surroundings especially the people who might heard what we are saying. So we need to be extra careful on things that we are about to say because others might interpret it differently. Also, we should also know first if the word that we used is appropriate in the context.
