The Good News Is: There Is Hope for Humanity

Trusting God in all circumstances

The 20th century and the early part of the 21st century have experienced many kinds of crises, from natural calamities like floods, earthquakes, and droughts; to man-made problems like inflation, wars, and terrorism. But many attest that the Covid-19 pandemic is probably the worst of all. In fact, older people claim that they had never experienced anything as frightening and as devastating like this one before. It has caused a big blow to the economy; it has restricted the people’s mobility; it has caused many deaths and it has made life even harder for the poor.

As all the news portals report nothing but the increasing number of deaths and new cases each day, many couldn’t help but ask if things would still get any better. If yes, when and how? And who could succor mankind from this dreadful situation?

While the whole world seems to be groping in the dark in their search for a solution to the vast problems that this virus has created, there is good news that could offer humanity hope and a big sigh of relief. The good news is that there is a God who is always willing to save us if we will submit ourselves to Him, obey Him, and have trust in Him.

It is apparent that the reason why many people today are disheartened and overwhelmed with so much apprehension is because they lack trust in God and in what He can do. And worse, they have alienated themselves from Him.

Our trust in God is what gives us peace of mind, hope, solace, and positivity —factors that do not only boost our immune system but also help us in dealing with difficult situations, such as plagues, pestilences, or pandemics.

This Covid-19 pandemic has yet to reach its peak, according to experts, as statistics keep on soaring every day. [Based on reports, from its onset up to this writing, more than three million people all over the world have tested positive, more than one million have recovered, and over two hundred thousand have died.]

When God sent a plague to the Egyptians, in just one night all their firstborns died. We can say that that particular plague was more devastating because in a matter of hours, it had killed thousands. And that was to show the Egyptians how powerful the God of Israel is. Insofar as Covid-19 is concerned, I think no country has registered the death of thousands in a single night as of yet, correct me if I am wrong.

According to the word of God, a plague may cause the fall — or death — of thousands.

PSALMS 91:6-9 (KJV) says,

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

The situation that the whole world is in right now is not yet a hopeless one; there is still a remedy. This pestilence may end if we will make God our refuge; if we place our trust in Him.

But if people will continue to refuse to believe in God, unto them will be fulfilled what was written in PSALMS 91:7, “A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”

Let me reiterate, the good news is not the eradication of the virus; the good news is that people may be saved from this contagion if they will put their trust in God, if they will wholeheartedly abide by His teachings, and if they turn away from their wicked ways. And granting that they get infected with this virus, such will not cause their fall, or death. As stated in PSALMS 91:8, “Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.” God has the power to stop the pestilence, and save those who trust and find refuge in Him.

While the world’s battle against Covid-19 is still far from over, it is very important that we pray, not just for our families and loved ones but also for all of those who are in the front lines — the leaders of countries, the healthcare providers, those who maintain peace and order, those who are engaged in the delivery of basic services, and for everyone else. Let us pray for their safety and protection.

It is God’s commandment that we pray.

PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7 (KJV) says,

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ.

Our fervent prayers and our trust in God are our potent weapons against plagues and pestilences. So, let us not fail to pray.

God wants us to pray for all men, including those who are in authority.

1 TIMOTHY 2:1-4 (KJV) says,

1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and honesty.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

God is delighted whenever we pray for other people because that is a manifestation that He had successfully implanted the love for our fellowmen in our hearts.

Unfortunately, sometimes, what other people pray for is the destruction or downfall of others, like what one Catholic priest is doing. He is praying for the death of President Duterte. I think that is very unbecoming of a priest. If he professes to be a Christian and an advocate of Christianity, he should know the biblical admonition that we ought to pray for those who are in authority. Or perhaps, he does not know it because he does not read the Bible!

A Christian, or a follower of Christ, prays even for his enemies.

MATTHEW 5:44 (KJV) says,

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

We have to pray even for those who persecute us and are despiteful of us. But let us not pray for their death or misfortune, instead let us pray that God bless them and have mercy on them.

When God sees that we show love and mercy to our fellowmen, surely, He will be merciful to us, too.

And by God’s mercy and by our trust in Him we can be saved from Covid-19. AMEN.
